Men's chokers? In or out? Clothing has become fluid over the past year with celebrities like Matt Lauer, Jaden Smith, and Kid Cudi all proving clothing has no gender. So lets be real... were we really surprised to hear ASOS announced they were going to start debuting chokers for men? Of course not, it's 2017!
You can go back to the 1960's and '70's when rockstars like Iggy Pop, Jimi Hendrix, and Mick Jagger made them popular. Let's not forget music icons like David Bowie, John Lennon, and elvis Presley who also have rocked the nostalgic choker. More recently Harry Styles and Young Thug have been pictured with the accessory.
Even with all of their popular history, GQ has made it their stance to tear down the newly resurfaced menswear trend before it explodes, in article titled, “Stop Men’s Choker Necklaces Before They Start”. One thing they assured readers was that breaking gender barriers in fashion was great, just not in the realm of men wearing chokers.
GQ writer Jake Woolf stated “And while we understand that gender in fashion is more fluid than ever, this is one area that is best left to the ladies. Plus, us guys have had our version of a choker necklace forever, and it’s called a necktie.”
The popularity of the choker was a fashion yes in women's fashion 2016 and now raising eyes in men's fashion in 2017! With NYMFW only 2 weeks away we are expecting to see chokers galore. Affinity Haus approves the mens choker!
